Google Search’s February 2023 Product Review Update

The February 2023 product review update will better reward websites that share high-quality product reviews, developed by experts or enthusiasts who know the topic well.

Periodically, Google Search makes improvements in its product review system. This ensures that the searchers get reviews that share in-depth research and not thin content that simply summarises product features.

On 21 February 2023, Google announced the release of the Product Review Update on Twitter:

How does the product review system work?

According to Google, the product review system operates differently depending on the number of product reviews on a website. If a website has only a small number of product reviews that don’t make up a significant portion of the website, Google will only evaluate those specific pages. However, for websites with a substantial number of product reviews, Google’s product review system can assess any content on the site and perform a site-wide evaluation.

Structured data, such as review snippet can help Google better identify if something is a product review but it doesn’t solely rely on that.

When will the February 2023 product review update rollout be completed?

Google launched the update on 21st February 2023 and the rollout might take up to two weeks (approx. 7th March) to complete.

Currently, this system applies to the following languages:

English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Russian, Dutch, Portuguese, and Polish.

The last product review update was in September 2022. You can track all Google algorithm updates on our website.

What does this product review update mean for your website?

You should follow Google’s guidelines on how to write high-quality product reviews to ensure that your site does not suffer from these updates.

If you make any improvements after the product review updates, the impacted content may not recover until the next product review update.
